5 Women’s History Month Videos for Kids
Do your students know that March is Women’s History Month? There are so many incredible women who have made important contributions in the United States.
Videos are an easy and engaging way to teach about women’s history. But finding high-quality videos can be difficult.
I want to make it easy for you! So, I am compiling lists of excellent kid-friendly history videos. Here are my 5 favorite Women’s History Month videos for kids!
Women’s History Month – PBS Kids
- PBS Kids’ short but informative video explains what Women’s History Month is and how it came to be
- 2 minutes
- My Rating: Ages 10+
- Notes: This video focuses mainly on the origins and development of Women’s History Month in America. It also features some prominent women who have been honored during Women’s History Month.
The 19th Amendment – History Channel
- History Channel’s video gives a clear and informative history of women’s voting rights in the United States
- 5 minutes
- My Rating: Ages 10+
- Notes: In addition to discussing historical events, this video also mentions a number of important leaders in the women’s suffrage movement, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul. The video also does a great job showing how the women’s suffrage movement evolved over time. To capitalize on this, consider having students create a timeline of their own.
Women in the 19th Century – Crash Course US History
- John Green’s witty and fast-paced overview delves into the details of women’s advancement and progress in the 19th century
- 13 minutes
- My Rating: Ages 14+ (John Green makes a joke about potty training at 2:26, references a beer hose/recreational drugs at 6:35, and birth control/sexual activity at 11:48)
- Notes: John Green talks fast! To help, turn on the closed captions and slow down the speed to .75. This video is much more in-depth than the others. Therefore, it is better for older students. Consider showing only parts of the video that are relevant to your students.
Suffragists Song – MrBettsClass
- Mr. Bett’s cringy Bruno Mars parody song reviews the women’s suffrage movement
- 4 minutes (you can skip the last minute and a half of the video)
- My Rating: Ages 8+
- Notes: This would be a great review video! It reinforces vocabulary words like suffrage, amendment, and ballots. Your students will enjoy learning about women’s suffrage while also laughing at this cheesy song.
Women’s History Month Video – US Department of Energy
- The U.S. Department of Energy’s video focuses on women who were scientific pioneers in their fields
- 3 minutes
- My Rating: Ages 10+
- Notes: This video focuses specifically on the impact of women from the US Department of Energy, like Liane Russell who discovered that the Y chromosome determines gender in mammals. This video gives students the opportunity to learn about modern-day women who have made incredible scientific advancements. The last minute of the video discusses the need for more women in STEM fields.
