Memes are funny or interesting items (like captioned pictures or videos) that are found widely online.
How can you use memes in the classroom?
- Need a bell-ringer? Start class with a meme! You could have students respond to the meme in writing (ex: What is the main idea? How would you explain this meme to someone who doesn’t get it?).
- Use memes as discussion starters. Put a meme on the board and use it as an attention-getter for a conversation.
- Use memes at the end of units. I like memes because often students only “get the joke” if they have some background knowledge about the historical topic.
- Ask students to create their own memes about a historical topic. This will be easier if you’ve looked at memes in class.
